Introduction and Basic of Rock Climbing

LMGA Rock | Cracks in the Cliff – 5-Day | Basic Rock Climbing Course

This 5-day program by the Ladakh Mountain Guide Association (LMGA) equips you with the fundamental skills and knowledge for safe and enjoyable rock climbing adventures. Through a combination of classroom instruction, practical exercises and supervised climbing on progressively challenging terrain, you’ll gain the confidence to tackle easier climbs outdoors.

Course Prerequisites:

  • Minimum age of 16 (parental consent required for minors)
  • Basic level of physical fitness
  • No prior climbing experience necessary

What to Bring:

  • Comfortable clothing and sturdy shoes suitable for hiking and climbing
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Sun protection (hat, sunglasses)
  • Lunch and snacks (enough for each day)
  • A positive attitude and willingness to learn!

Course Schedule:

Day 1 Foundational Skills

  • Morning: Introduction to rock climbing – history, ethics, equipment (harness, helmet, carabiners, ropes)
  • Afternoon: Knot tying – essential knots for climbing (figure eight, double fisherman, bowline)
  • Classroom & Practical Sessions

Day 2 Movement & Safety

  • Morning: Rock climbing movement techniques – footwork, handholds, body positioning
  • Afternoon: Belaying basics – giving and receiving a belay, communication, safety checks
  • Climbing Wall & Practical Sessions

Day 3 Climbing on the Rock

  • Morning: Introduction to top-rope climbing – setting up anchors, communication signals
  • Afternoon: Supervised climbing on low-angle rock faces, applying learned techniques in a real-world setting
  • Outdoor Crag & Supervised Climbing

Day 4 Building Confidence

  • Morning: Review of belaying techniques, lead climbing introduction (optional)
  • Afternoon: Climbing on slightly steeper terrain, practicing route reading and overcoming challenges
  • Outdoor Crag & Supervised Climbing

Day 5 Putting it All Together

  • Morning: Review of all learned skills, risk management, climbing etiquette
  • Afternoon: Culminating climb – applying all your knowledge on a challenging route (with instructor support)
  • Outdoor Crag & Supervised Climbing

Assessment:

Throughout the course, instructors will assess your progress and provide constructive feedback. There is no formal exam but participation and demonstration of safe climbing practices are crucial.

  • Upon successful completion, you’ll receive a certificate of participation from the LMGA.
  • This course is a stepping stone for further development. Consider enrolling in “Fissures to Faces” (intermediate) for more in-depth climbing skills.
