Naming the Giants: The First Ascent of the 6,291m Kargyam Massif

Introduction: Giving a Voice to the Silent Peaks

For centuries, the jagged skyline of the Lalok region in Eastern Ladakh has remained a collection of “unnamed points” on topographic maps. To the world, these were just numbers—silent giants watching over the high-altitude deserts. But to the people of the La-Lung Valley, these peaks are the guardians of their culture and history.

On December 22, 2025, the Ladakh Mountain Guide Association (LMGA) decided it was time to give these giants a name. Upon reaching the summit of the highest point in the range at 2:10 PM, our team officially christened the range the Kargyam Massif. By naming it after the Kargyam region, we ensure that the identity of the mountain is forever tied to the land and the people who live at its feet.

I. The Philosophy of Naming: Why “Kargyam Massif”?

In the history of Himalayan exploration, many peaks were named by foreign explorers. However, the LMGA believes in a different approach. We believe that the right to name a mountain belongs to those who live in its shadow and those who are the first to stand upon its summit.

We chose the name Kargyam Massif because this cluster of peaks defines the geography of the Kargyam Village area. It is a tribute to the resilience of the local community. By establishing this name, we are placing Kargyam on the international mountaineering map, ensuring that when future climbers search for their next challenge, they find their way to our local villages.

II. The 2025 Winter Masterclass: The 6,291m Main Summit

The journey to name this massif culminated in a brutal winter expedition. While most of the world was celebrating the year’s end in the warmth of their homes, five Ladakhi heroes were battling temperatures dropping to -30°C and oxygen levels below 50%.

The Team of Pioneers

Led by Skalzang Rigzin, the team consisted of Rigzin Angdu, Dorjee Tondup, Stanzin Wangail, and Phuntsog Namgyal. Their mission was clear: reach the highest point of the unnamed massif and claim it for the local guiding community.

When they finally stepped onto the highest point, the view from the top of the 6,291m Kargyam Massif was unlike any other—a 360-degree panorama of the Trans-Himalayas, where the brown earth of the plateau meets the deep sapphire of the high-altitude sky.

III. A Legacy of Exploration: Our 2025 Expedition List

The naming of the massif was the result of a year-long obsession. Throughout 2025, our guides returned to different points of the massif to test the terrain in every season. We didn’t just want to climb it; we wanted to know its every ridge and couloir. We challenged these peaks in different seasons to see how the mountain changes, ensuring we have the best experience to share with our clients.

Our Past Expedition Records

Below is the record of the summits conquered by our team across the Kargyam Massif throughout 2025:

Month (2025) Peak Designation Altitude Team Members
May Kargyam Massif (North) 6,205m Dorjee Tondup, Stanzin Wangail, Phuntsog Namgyal, Jigmet Stanzin
June Kargyam Massif (Ridge) 6,181m Dorjee Tondup, Stanzin Wangail, Phuntsog Namgyal, Jigmet Stanzin
July Kargyam Massif (South) 6,169m Dorjee Tondup, Stanzin Wangail, Phuntsog Namgyal, Jigmet Stanzin
July Kargyam Massif (Spur) 6,100m Phuntsog Namgyal, Stanzin Norboo
December Main Summit 6,291m Skalzang Rigzin (L), Rigzin Angdu, Dorjee Tondup, Stanzin Wangail, Phuntsog Namgyal

IV. Why This Matters for Sustainable Tourism

Naming the Kargyam Massif is a strategic move for the LMGA. When a mountain is “unnamed,” it is often ignored by the global climbing community. By giving it a name, a height, and a story, we are creating a brand for Kargyam Village.

Every expedition we lead to the Kargyam Massif follows these strict rules:

  1. Local Logistics: We use horses and porters exclusively from Kargyam Village.
  2. Home-Grown Expertise: The guides you see on our list—Dorjee Tondup, Stanzin Wangail, Phuntsog Namgyal—are not just employees; they are the owners of this knowledge.
  3. Eco-Conscious Climbing: Because this massif is our “backyard,” we are committed to keeping it clean. We carry out more than we carry in.

V. Meet the Guardians of the Massif

The success of 2025 is a testament to the specialized skills of our guides.

  • Dorjee Tondup: With four major summits on the massif in a single year, Dorjee has likely spent more time above 6,000m on this mountain than anyone in history.
  • Stanzin Wangail & Phuntsog Namgyal: This duo was instrumental in the June and July explorations, ensuring that the routes were perfectly documented for future clients.
  • Jigmet Stanzin & Stanzin Norboo: Their contributions to the 6,100m and 6,205m peaks show that the future of LMGA is in safe, capable hands.

VI. Conclusion: Your Journey to the Kargyam Massif Starts Here

The Kargyam Massif is no longer a mystery. It is a mapped, named, and conquered reality. But while we have stood on its summits, there are still a thousand stories yet to be told on its slopes.

At lmgaladakh.org, we invite you to join us. Whether you want to follow in the footsteps of Skalzang Rigzin, Dorjee Tondup, Rigzin Angdu, Phuntsog Namgyal, Stanzin Wangail and Jigmet Stanzin and tackle the 6,291m main summit in the winter or you prefer a summer trek to the 6,100m spur with Stanzin Norboo, we have the expertise to take you there.

We didn’t just climb the mountain; we named it. Now, let us show it to you.
