On July 4, 2025, the Ladakh Mountain Guide Association (LMGA) conducted an official inspection at Hamurja Campsite in the scenic Markha Valley, a popular destination for trekkers and climbers. The purpose of this field visit was to verify the mountain and trekking guide ID cards issued by LMGA and to ensure that only certified and trained guides are leading treks in the region.
The LMGA inspection team consisted of:
- Skalzang Rigzin – President
- Tsewang Namgyal – Vice President
- Sonam Yangjor – LMGA Guide
- Rigzin Angdu – Executive Member
This inspection is part of LMGA’s broader initiative to promote safety, professionalism, and local empowerment in Ladakh’s adventure tourism sector.
Why Certified Guides Matter
President Skalzang Rigzin highlighted the importance of using certified guides for trekking and climbing expeditions. “Just speaking English doesn’t make someone a qualified mountain guide,” he said. “A real guide requires proper mountaineering training, route knowledge, high-altitude experience, and the ability to handle emergencies in harsh Himalayan conditions.”
The ID cards issued by LMGA represent more than identity—they are proof of a guide’s skills, training, and commitment to safety. These cards are only given to those who meet LMGA’s strict standards in guiding, wilderness safety, and high-altitude operations.

Local guides welcomed the inspection with enthusiasm. Many expressed pride in being part of an association that puts safety and standards first. They shared that tourists often assume anyone with basic English and hiking knowledge is a guide—but in high-altitude zones like Markha Valley, this assumption can be dangerous.
One guide said, “We’ve worked hard to earn our LMGA certification. This inspection helps protect our profession and build trust with travelers.”

LMGA strongly urges all tour companies, travel agents, and independent travelers to only hire guides who are LMGA-certified. Hiring certified professionals not only ensures a safe and responsible adventure but also supports local livelihoods and encourages more youth to pursue guiding as a respected career.
